Characters

See who your characters are to each other, and write how each one treats the other as the film goes on.

Every project keeps its own record of who its characters are to each other. You do not need a story project or a World for it: the characters are the project's own character assets. Open a project, choose Assets, then choose Relationships at the top of the page.

The page shows the project's characters as a map. A line joins two characters who share a bond, and the bond's word sits in the middle of it. The strip under the map steps from Opening through your sequences, named as the Sequences list names them, so you can watch how each character treats the other change from one sequence to the next. New character adds a character to the project, and Back to assets returns to the library.

  • Click a character to list everyone they are tied to.
  • Click a line to open the pair. The Bond group at the top holds the word for what is simply true of the two of them. Below it, one column per direction says how each one treats the other at the sequence you are on.
  • Edit a row to write a change at that sequence. Each row saves on its own, and a half-typed edit stays on this device until it is saved, even if you close the panel or reload the page.
  • A row you did not change at this sequence shows where it was last written.

Ties

Who this character is tied to at the project's last sequence, or at the opening when it has no sequences yet. Open one to see the pair on the graph, or press + to add a bond.

  1. Open a character from Assets.
  2. In the right panel, Ties lists everyone this character is tied to, as things stand at the project's last sequence. The note above the list names it, and reads At the opening for a project with no sequences yet.
  3. Click Open on a row to go to the graph with that pair open.
  4. To add a bond, press + in the head of Ties. Choose which way the bond reads, pick the other character, and write the word your film uses, such as mentor, rival or sister. Then choose Add bond.

A bond joins two characters in the same project, so the other character has to be one of this project's character assets. If a bond cannot be added, the reason shows under the fields and nothing you typed is lost.
